“My paper went from a blank page to submission-ready.”

“My research writing has become directed with more momentum thanks to Composition Coaching. Since we’ve worked together over the past few semesters my project has reached a logical stopping point, and my paper went from a blank page to submission ready.”

“My research writing has become directed with more momentum thanks to Composition Coaching. Since we’ve worked together over the past few semesters my project has reached a logical stopping point, and my paper went from a blank page to submission ready. The organization of my writing has improved tremendously. I feel more confident that a broader audience will better understand my research writing because you have improved how I analyze, caption, and discuss my figures and thoughts.

A huge amount of weight gets lifted off my shoulders every time Will has helped me make a plan or analyze my latest results. I feel that Will has gone to extraordinary lengths to understand my research and the setting I am operating in and has accommodated each of my needs with immense compassion and care. I likely could not afford this service for myself and therefore would not have even considered it as an option.

My response to anxiety has always had an element of paralysis to it, but that became amplified with the lack of structure in graduate school and lack of familiarity with my new field of study’s expectations. Composition Coaching helped me turn that anxiety into a productive energy by creating a structure and plan of attack for my writing and research that motivated me to improve my day-to-day working habits.”

“Incredibly grateful and privileged to have found this support.”

“When I approached Will over a year ago, it was after I had completed my data collection and begun to put all the pieces of my dissertation together. Despite having advisors, all sorts of academic connections, and a full written proposal at the time, I still felt extremely overwhelmed as I approached this final stage of writing. As I reflect on this past year of dissertation work, I feel incredibly grateful and privileged to have found this support.

Firstly, a huge part of Will’s coaching style is providing emotional support. Will offers emotional support through traditional ways by asking questions about the writing process, being a good listener, and acknowledging the ups and downs of the writing process. But more importantly, Will also provides emotional support by showing personal investment in his client’s success. Will strives with every meeting to advocate for you, your goals, and the work. The advocacy part of this coaching service has been crucial because this phase of my academic career has involved a lot of self-doubt, and I often felt isolated. Will supported me during our weekly meetings by acknowledging the difficulties of the process, celebrating the wins, getting rid of the unnecessary negative self-talk, and filtering through my ideas. In retrospect, I don’t think I would have been able to make meaningful progress in the past year on my own. Will’s investment in his client’s success and his way of advocating for them in every meeting makes this coaching service exceptional and different from other types of academic support.

Secondly, Will’s coaching service has also been incredibly helpful in providing content guidance in different ways. Firstly, Will provides support by talking through the content, which is the most important part of our sessions. I don’t always have clarity in my thinking during our sessions, yet I am always impressed by Will’s ability to listen and filter through the noise and help guide my thinking. Secondly, Will is able to guide the writing process either through explicit and/or implicit feedback. Receiving feedback can sometimes be emotionally jarring; however, Will is always patient and considerate towards his clients by checking in and asking permission, especially when giving direct feedback. Will is also able to model writing behavior through our drafting, which has helped me recognize the blind spots in my writing and professional voice. Watching him guide and model the writing process not only benefited the project we are working on, but I am able to notice different ways I can improve my writing and professional voice outside of our sessions. Will is very patient, positive, compassionate, an excellent communicator, and very consistent in his feedback, all essential traits that provided me with the stability and support I needed for my writing progress.

Finally, my project this past year involved several different areas of work, such as the writing process (i.e., drafting, writing, and revising), data management, including organization, clean up, and analysis, and administrative tasks like meeting prep and writing emails. Will managed to provide concrete support every step of the way, regardless of the area of work or task we were working on. It is always impressive watching Will lead each session with ideas, solutions, and support. Finally, given all the different ways Will is able to provide support, I appreciated that I was able to cater each session based on what I needed that day to help me with my writing progress, whether it was drafting, talking, organizing, etc.”

“The output is probably 2-3 times the quality of what I would have been able to produce sitting alone.”

“Overall the coaching through this project was a major step change in my writing process and output for this project. The coaching format where we had a doc open and talked through notes and strategy really helped take jumbled stories and ideas and get them into shape into a coherent narrative with supporting evidence. I went from having a 10+ year old job packet that didn’t reflect my experiences over the last decade to a packet that highlights my teaching and technical skills and is ready for critical readers. With Will’s coaching I would say the output is probably 2-3 times the quality of what I would have been able to produce sitting alone, and the process of having a coach along the way turned this from a task that probably would have had some panic and anxiety about each time to manageable chunks that I knew would eventually get to the quality level required if I put in the effort and took feedback seriously. Given the next tier of universities in Pittsburgh would likely be a pay cut of 40-50% from the CMU level, the benefit I get from a strong packet and coaching from Will along the way could result in substantial lifetime earnings boost well into the six figures.

Some other details that come to mind, are the moments when Will helped “reframe” some of the challenges I was facing. I came into a few sessions feeling behind on everything, like I was disappointing people, and like I just didn’t have the skillset or energy required to do it all. Will helped me take a step back and see the bigger picture. We are all struggling with things. The situation was difficult because I was put into a difficult situation, and writing these packets is legit hard. I wasn’t a failure as human being for struggling with writing, this part of the human condition to believe we are not good enough.”

“Will was right there with me in the depths of the challenge.”

“There’s not enough space for all the words of gratitude I have here. Will’s coaching through a really challenging time in life and career helped me see how to move through struggle, pain, and discomfort and get to the other side stronger. I have worked with a therapist for years, but when working with Will the consistency of talking through progress and challenges weekly helped me really pin down bad habits, negative thinking, and life skills (time management, planning, communication, etc) that I needed to improve to move forward in my career. I would get stuck in a defeated place of not making the progress I wanted to make, and Will’s Socratic questions kindly probing where I was getting stuck and coaching, encouragement, and helping me see a path to the other side of this valley helped me move through the difficult emotions and continue the work. My therapist said, ‘Sounds like Will’s giving you some really helpful advice.’

Maybe as a summary, working with a therapist I can talk through the emotional pieces once a month but by then it was hard to pin down how to move through the challenge. Will was right there with me in the depths of the challenge, listened well and encouraged, and then shined a light on how to adapt what I was doing in the moment to get better results. ”

“I have a much better grasp on how to have strong, clear, and concise wording.”

“Having a writing coach has been great, it really helps to have someone clarify the jumbled words coming out of my mouth and that are on the page. Compared to when I started, I feel like I have a much better grasp on how to have strong, clear, and concise wording. I felt extremely supported in all aspects of the writing process. I felt very comfortable telling Will exactly how I would feel about this paper, whether I was frustrated with the progress of the project itself or if my motivation was extremely low.”
-Patrick, Research Assistant, Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh

“We finished everything we planned so far.”

“I like having someone to help me plan and manage the writing process. The biggest excuses for me are: ‘I still have time’ and ‘I don’t know how to start.’ With you, I felt relieved that I felt I have someone else to share the burden of writing with. We finished everything we planned so far in the timeframe that we expected, so, I think this is a great progress.”
-Zach, Postdoc, Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh

“I didn’t feel stressed.”

“It was really great having a writing coach who taught me the essentials of writing academic papers. My main concern before starting the writing process was the intro section, and I always felt stressed about it. However, going through our sessions and a methodical approach, I didn’t feel stressed, and I was happy with the progress. I felt very lucky to have a supporting coach and a supportive supervisor who provided me with the opportunity to work with you.”
-Sadra, PhD Candidate, Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

“An invaluable opportunity for me.”

“Having a research writing coach this summer has proven to be an invaluable opportunity for me. It provided me with a unique chance to observe and learn from an expert's approach to writing tasks, highlighting the gaps between my own writing and the standards of perfection. I have now gained the ability to easily recognize and comprehend the key structural components of research papers, particularly the abstract and introduction sections. This newfound understanding has not only enhanced my own writing abilities but also empowered me to evaluate other publications with a critical eye, as if I were a reviewer myself.

If we were to analogize the clarity of my manuscript to the level of detail observable in the images of the Pillars of Creation captured by the Hubble telescope: it has now grown closer to the imagery obtained by the James Webb space telescope:
I want to express my sincere gratitude for the invaluable guidance and support you provided.”
-Mehdi, PhD Candidate, Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh

“The mentorship that I have been looking for.”

“You have definitely provided the mentorship that I have been looking for throughout my Ph.D experience. Second to firing my advisor, you have been the best move. I can’t express how grateful I am for the work that we’re doing. How did I get through my whole PhD without having this support?”

“You don’t understand how much weight you took off of me.”

“I'm not scared of it any more. I'm actually enjoying it. It was intimidating, because I had no experience and I didn't even know how to convey the idea. But now I understand that I have an idea, and sorting them through made it clear that I have a good idea. You don't understand how much weight you took off of me.”
-Mukhayyirkhuja (Mukha), Visiting Researcher, Biomedical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

“The best thing that’s happened to me all of graduate school.”

“I do not feel as though my ideas, opinions, or self are respected by my advisor. You’ve been the best thing that’s happened to me all of graduate school. You consistently go the extra mile to guide my compass north and it make a hugely positive difference in so many aspects of my life! It breaks my heart that I didn’t have access to your services sooner.”

“Extremely helpful.”

Extremely helpful. I'm not a natural writer, and writing is a lot of hard work for me. Some weeks I hit my goals, while other weeks I accomplish nothing. Will is great about helping me acknowledge and face my challenges and provides structure and encouragement to overcome them. Other sources of guidance tend to be more static (books), or unstructured (calls for proposals).”
-Aaron, Assistant Professor, Education, Saint Vincent College

“Exceeded my expectations.”

“Research writing coaching exceeded my expectations. I really appreciated the extra help that I got in writing my dissertation proposal document, which I had dreaded previously. I appreciated being held accountable for meeting the mini-deadlines I had set for myself, since I knew I would be procrastinating writing unless I was to be held responsible by an external party. I also appreciated the empathy and support whenever I was unable to complete some of the tasks I had set for myself. I was able to submit my dissertation proposal document on time and defend it successfully in front of my thesis committee. I consider the goals that I had set for this project to have been met.”
-Mahpara, PhD Candidate, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, University of Pittsburgh

“Great progress.”

“The journal paper only had a rough draft of the introduction written when the writing coach was introduced. It is currently going through the final revisions before submissions, so I think that it's a great progress!”
-Joanna, PhD Candidate, Mechanical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

“A huge help to my group.”

“Will has been a huge help to my group! He helps us get papers out the door faster, and with higher quality. Tenure-stream faculty in engineering are expected to juggle a lot of things: research, teaching and service. There’s a lot of writing that has to get done, but it often gets put on the back burner due to more urgent tasks. Even though I’m a caring, involved advisor, I can get burned out managing all of the steps involved in mentoring my grad students to publish papers (ideation, drafting, structuring, proofreading, etc.) Pretty soon, I had a backlog of 10+ journal papers in the pipeline that needed to get out the door before I went up for tenure, so when I learned about Will’s writing services, I immediately signed my grad students up! His value-add is that he’s able to offload some of the writing mentoring, so I can focus on the technical things: managing research funding, getting results, etc. I’d highly recommend him to any faculty who are in this boat.”
-Katherine, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, University of Pittsburgh

“A really helpful experience.”

“This coaching was helpful in getting me outside of my own head and accepting that the support I offer to others and think others should have is support that I am also permitted to have and can benefit from. Having this kind of professional accountability and accompaniment is a new experience for me, so sometimes it felt strange, sometimes self-indulgent. But the consistency over the course of a whole year proved a really helpful experience.”
-Kristina, Assistant Professor, Philosophy

“Kept me focusing.”

“The scheduled meetings and submission deadlines kept me focusing on my dissertation periodically. Otherwise, it could be very easy to delay what I need to do for getting the PhD degree, especially when I had a full-time job. I had been struggled with the way of doing research and was often stuck in doing endless analyses without thinking much about the top-level goals. The discussions with the coach helped me understand how to do research with 4 corners of research writing, and more importantly, why we even do research.”
-Nick, PhD Candidate, Health Geography, Kent State University

“Incredibly helpful.”

“Especially for someone in a small department, this feedback has been incredibly helpful in getting me to see places in my writing that needed to be clarified in an audience-specific way.”
-Jennifer, Assistant Professor, Rhetoric

“A really nice change.”

“Sometimes some of the other feedback I've gotten has felt dismissive or condescending, which doesn't make me want to engage with the bits that might be useful. This was a really nice change from that.”
-Christy, PhD student, Cultural Studies, McGill University

“Was, in a way, healing.”

“I appreciated how holistic the coaching was ... The affective part of this coaching was a real selling point for me. I think the quality of the writing guidance is also high quality, but for me, affirming my feelings and experiences was, in a way, healing.”
-Rebecca, Assistant Professor, Communication, Lenoir-Rhyne University
